All bar one of the blue tit nests have now hatched, the early ones just over a week ago, and the second group in the last day or two. It seems that there will be only four Pied Flycatcher nests this year, but that includes a record, for me, of a nest with 8 eggs. Two others have 7 eggs and the last one has 6. They normally have had 5 or 6 eggs in my nest boxes over the years, so something seems to have happened to them this year, yet the blue tit egg numbers have gone the opposite way without a single nest in double figures, have always had a 12 or 13 previously. More remarkably are the second group of nest sizes are 6,4,4 and 1. Perhaps the food source was low ? Strangely they were laid almost the same time as the large Pied Flycatcher nests.
On the domestic front, we have six new chickens, 2 magpies(black), 2 warrens (brown) and 2 light sussex (white). The first egg from them arrived today. Still have the other 5, who have been put off by the new arrivals and have taken to laying away from the nest boxes, found 19 in one little spot in one of the barns.
